This test detects the urinary products of estrogen metabolism through a 24-hour urine sample.
Estradiol (E2) and Estrone (E1) are measured in this test, and are converted into at least 14 different species of metabolites, each with their own specific biological actions. Possessing either stimulatory or antagonistic properties, these metabolites must remain in balance for optimal health. An imbalance in estrogen metabolism has been associated with osteoporosis, high blood pressure, lupus and cancer.Â
Estrogen metabolites can be modified by lifestyle and nutrition changes, which makes this test a useful indicator for establishing risk and monitoring treatments to correct the balance.
