Iron is needed for the formation and maintenance of red blood cells, and therefore influences the body’s capacity to transport oxygen. This test will note iron, transferrin and transferrin saturation to highlight potential deficiencies.
Iron is a critical component of haemoglobin, which is the protein in red blood cells that binds oxygen in the lungs to release for blood oxygenation. Iron is needed not only for red blood cells, but is essential to muscle health.
Iron deficiency is otherwise known as anaemia, and can cause the muscles and body to work ineffectively, among other adverse health effects.
